The wife of Eastern Cape’s Amathole District Municipality mayor has tested positive for Covid-19, the municipality announced on Monday evening.
In a statement, municipal spokesperson Nonceba Madikizela-Vuso said the mayor, Khanyile Maneli, had self-isolated.
“As means of protecting the communities he interfaces with on a daily basis, the mayor undertook Covid-19 test and encouraged all leaders to do the same,” Madikizela-Vuso said. “Today, the wife of the executive mayor received results that she has contracted the virus.
“This prompted the executive mayor to re-test for Covid-19, as well as his core staff. His results will be made public as soon as they are received.”
ADM urged communities to obey regulations in order to flatten the curve.
Attempts are being made to solicit comment from the mayor.
This is a developing story.
