AKA remembers his late fiancèe, Nelli Tembe, on a Tik Tok video. They were wearing simple clothes and socks dancing in their kitchen while Nellie was cooking a meal for them. The rapper added a broken heart emoji to the video to express his sadness over losing the love of his life to death.
Nelli Tembe’s tragic death
Nelli tragically passed away on the 11th of April 2021 by falling from the 10th floor at Pepperclub Hotel in Loop street Cape Town. Initially, the cause of the 22-year-old’s cause of death was declared a suicide, but her case was reopened again after witnesses heard a commotion in the hotel room she was in before she allegedly jumped. Nelli Tembe’s family also released a statement saying their daughter never showed any signs of depression or symptoms of being suicidal.
She was laid to rest on the 16th of April, AKA looked shattered on the day, and one of the stars to comfort him at the funeral was the singer Sjava. In May, Nelli Tembe’s friend went to the police and alleged that AKA may have had a hand in Nelli’s death. The friend released video footage of AKA breaking down a wooden door with his body and a picture of Nelli with a badly bruised face. This probed authorities to look further into the matter and reopen the case. When this information came to light, Twitter users were ready to cancel, AKA over the speculations. The speculations didn’t go anywhere because of insufficient evidence linking AKA to her death.
Tributes to Nelli Tembe
AKA also shared the same Tik Tok video on his Instagram stories; he has also released a song dedicated to Nelli titled Tears Run Dry. In the song, he laments about the pain in his heart over her death. He also speaks about being scared to sleep if he dreams about her and the pain cutting deep when he realises that Nelli is still no more. The actress Nondumiso Tembe also posted about her young relative’s death and quoted a bible scripture in her remembrance.
