ZESA tariffs May 2020: ZESA has increased electricity tariffs as the power utility company keeps up with the ever rising inflation. The general prices of basic goods are rising in Zimbabwe. As at the end of March, inflation year on year inflation is above 500%.

New Zesa tariffs
First 50 units now $24.50 up from $20.50
150 units now $162 up from $136.50
200 units is now $186.5 up from $157
New prices per kwh
First 50 units is now $0.49 up from $0.41
Next 150 units now /1.08 up from $0.91
After 200 units have been consumed all other units will.now cost $4.61 up from $3.87
Zimbabwe is currently battling to provide its citizens with food as over 8,5 million people are food insecure according to a letter wrote by the Minister of Finance to IMF.
ZESA has been facing electricity supply challenges over the last year which resulted in electricity only being available for 6 hours of the night. The challenges were caused by the drying up of the Kariba dam which has been severely affected by climate change. The dam has since refilled due to the 2020 rainfall and Zimbabwe is hoping to generate more electricity this year.
Zesa introduced a stepped up tariff system this year where it is charging more to commercial users and charging less to residential users. The stepped up system has enabled the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) to run its operations smoothly. More power has been imported from Mozambique and South Africa to meet the local demand.
Increase in ZESA tariffs in May 2020 comes as the industry in Zimbabwe has been adversely affected by power outage that has resulted in the country’s growth going negative by 7%. The country projects 15% to 20% negative growth for 2020.
