President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that R50 billion will be allocated social grants and unemployment benefits.
An amount of R350 will be paid to qualifying unemployed individuals for six months.
How to apply for R350 unemployment grant
- The R350 grant will be paid to South African permanent residents and registered refugees.
- Unemployed registered (In the Home Affairs system) individuals without any other source of income will be paid R350 for six months.
- Qualifying applicants must be aged 18years and above, without any income or any other social grant benefit received. National Student Financial Aid Scheme recipients will not be considered.
- Prospective applications would need to provide an ID number, name and surname as captured on the ID, their gender and disability (if applicable), the name of the bank they bank with and account number, proof of residence, contact details and cell phone number(s).
Government addressing issue of bank accounts
The government is trying to device the best way to help and reach those unemployed without bank accounts. ‘We are aware that some of the unemployed and qualifying individuals do not have bank accounts. As a department we are looking to find the best and inclusive way of reaching them and make sure they receive their grants effectively and efficiently.”

“We are still finalizing additional channels, including SMS, self-help desk and an online application process. We will give information as soon as possible,” Lindiwe Zulu added.
Minister Lindiwe Zulu pleaded with the public to ensure that they full understand how the grant application process works.
‘It is essential that the population knows how the application procedure works and how and when the grants are going to be paid. There is no instant payment into submitted accounts, all the information has to be checked, verified and confirmed with Home Affairs registrations.
