ZIMBABWEAN top police officer is battling for life after shot while stealing maize in Nyabira just outside Harare.
Assistant Inspector Calisto Mutero who is stationed at Nyabira Police Station was in Monday shot in the back whilst stealing maize at Gwebi College of Agriculture.
He was in company of his two minor children and general worker he was shot.
Currently, he is admitted at Parirenyatwa Hospital where is battling for life and receiving medical attention.
National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident and said it was under investigation.
Officials at Gwebi College for Agriculture could not be reached for comment as they are reportedly closed for the national lockdown.
Assistant Inspector Mutero is believed to have been shop by one of the guards who are protecting the college during the lockdown.
Meanwhile, due to the national lockdown most police officer have been caught of guard with some caught demanding bribes from motorists to give them passage on blocks while others are getting involved in thieving scandals.
Some are complaining that they are not being provided with food which they were promised while manning roadblocks and they are being left to fend for themselves.
This has made a low impact on the lockdown as people are taking advantage of the hungry and desperate police officers to conduct their day to day activities.
In Chegutu, 10 police officers were arrested for gold panning behind David Whitehead Textiles sewage ponds without the necessary documents.
The place was invaded by illegal gold panners during a gold rush some time last year until they were dispersed by members from the Police Support Unit.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi has always urged members of the public to report any corrupt activities in relation to police officers to that they can be brought to book by the responsible authorities.
