South African singer Makhadzi Muimbi made one of her best performances this year at the AFRIMA awards in Nigeria. The ‘African Queen’ was in the West African country together with Blaq Diamond at one of African’s most prestigious awards ceremonies.
Makhadzi is touring Africa.
The Kokovha singer has had a fruitful year, touring several African countries and stamping her authority as the queen of African music.
Zimbabwe
Makhadzi performed in early October at the birthday of the Zimbabwe government’s treasury boss George Guvamatanga. It was her first time performing in the country. Reports suggest the singer and the Mafikizolo duo, who also performed at the party, were paid double payments after putting up an outstanding performance on the night.
She is well north of Limpopo as she collaborated with musician Jah Prayzah and, most notably Zimbabwe-born Mr Brown on several occasions.
Malawi
Makhadzi performed in Malawi at the Hangout Music Festival early this month and was arguably the most cheered performer on the night. Dressed in pink and her dancers, she received loud cheers from the audience as she graced the stage. Fans sang along to most of the songs she performed.

The Matorokisi hitmaker’s performance in Botswana was one of her personal best as she shared the stage with her idol Charma Gal. Her music is popular in Botswana, and fans sang along with her collaboration with Charma, Themba Mutu. She also got to share the stage with the legendary Vee Mampzeey.
Makhadzi’s Nigeria performance and the AFRIMA awards
Wearing a red skirt and a red and blacktop, Makhadzi ran to the stage as her name was called out as the winner of Continental Category – Artist of the year. The African Queen fend of competition from nominees of the award; Diamond Platinumz, Burna Boy and Fali Ipupa. The award comes as the Limpopo based artist always complains of being sidelined in local music awards and, most notably, the South Africa Music Awards (SAMAs).
Her performance was also befitting of an award. Dressed in the same attire as her dancers, Makhadzi put up an electric version and made her usual ‘falling down’ dance moves.
Among the winners was South African duo Blaq Diamond, who won Best Male artist Southern Africa for 2021.
