29 Zimbabweans die from coronavirus in UK: The Zimbabwean Embassy in London has confirmed that at least 29 people have died from covid-19 in a statement.
Most of the deceased are health workers who have been at the frontline of the fight against the virus. Zimbabwe exports a lot of medical talent to the United Kingdom.
Zimbabwe ambassador to the UK, Christian Katsande’s statement read that the embassy had not received official communication from the government but have compiled information from the Zimbabweans in the UK, church leaders and cluster leaders.
“To date, the Embassy has not received updated information from the host Government on the deaths of Zimbabweans due to Covid-19, understandably because the British government has explained that it is currently seized with implementing measures to contain the pandemic. They have promised to provide detailed information as soon as it is possible….but has been able to gather information from the Diaspora community and religious leaders, cluster leaders, affected individuals and the media, on Zimbabweans who have passed on due to Covid-19.”
The ambassador has set up clusters inorder to be able to effectively communicate and bond with the diaspora community.
“He set up clusters that include (health cluster, education cluster, agriculture cluster, infrastructure and financial services cluster) to assist in coordinating activities and communication between the Embassy and the Diaspora community. The Embassy has also cultivated mutually beneficial relationships with various Zimbabwean community and religious leaders across the United Kingdom.”
18,738 have died from the coronavirus in UK with 138,000 recorded cases.
Zimbabwe is currently battling to handle its citizens that are returning from the diaspora. The government does not have enough resources to take care of these returning citizens and have reduced the mandatory quarantine time from 21 days to 7 days.
