Free State police officers arrested for drinking alcohol
Six police officers stationed at the Namahadi police station in Qwaqwa in the Free State have been arrested for using alcohol while on duty. The suspects were allegedly spotted at a tavern on Saturday by members of the community. The six will be charged with defeating ends of justice, failing to confine in terms of Covid-19 Act.
Members of community informed police at Phuthaditjhaba of five (5) members of the organisation based at Namahadi police station busy drinking liquor at a certain tavern whilst on duty.
The back up was summoned to the scene wherein members fled the scene upon seeing the approach of other members. Fortunately, the tavern owner(44) was arrested for failing to comply with the act. All liquor was seized and business closed.
On 19/04/2020 the shift D members of Namahadi came to work and four were arrested on duty and fifth member booked off sick arrested at her home including a police reservist.
All police officials will be charged with defeating ends of justice, failing to confine in terms of Covid-19 Act.
All members were arrested by Phuthaditjhaba Tactical Response Team inside Community Service Centre and two others at their homes. The six suspects will be charged departmentally as well as criminally except the tavern owner.
The Phuthaditjhaba Cluster Commander, Major General Peter Moloi was forming part of the arrest during the unfolding of the processes and glad of the steps taken against the members as he previously warned members within the cluster not work against the state in this difficult times where they need to comply and abide by the
