Hazyview residents in Mpumalanga province broke lockdown rules to loot meat from a delivery truck that was involved in an accident in their area. According to trucking blog SATrucker, residents ‘forgot’ the lockdown rules and stampeded the scene to steal from the truck.
Residents close to the scene told the police that the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree on the side of the road.
“We saw the truck from our house, we realised it was an accident. We ran her to help the driver. But when we reached here we saw meat. We asked if the driver was okay and he said he was fine. We then started taking the meat from the truck. Other residents joined in and they started to come from their houses until it was chaotic,” a member of a community near the accident scene told Sowetan.
Spokesperson of the Mpumalanga department of community safety, security and liaison Moeti Mmusi condemned the behaviour, saying such behaviours do not help the effort being made to combat coronavirus.
