The Supreme Court today ruled that Nelson Chamisa is not the legitimate MDC leader in a judgment that has further stimulated the leadership wrangle between him and Dr Thokozani Khupe.
The ruling follows an appeal by MDC-Alliance leaders Chamisa and Morgan Komichi challenging a High Court ruling in May last year which declared that Chamisa was illegitimately acting as the party leader.
The dismissal of the appeal will reinstate Khupe as the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change and the opposition party is directed to go back and start from February 15, 2018.
It is still to be seen how the ruling will be enforced. Chamisa commands a larger support than Khupe. It is unlikely that MDC supporters will follow Khupe.
Khupe broke the news before the ruling. She posted:
I’ve just received a call from my lawyer @ProfMadhuku informing me that the SC, judgement will be handed down today @ 3pm. I call upon our members & supporters to remain calm & accept whatever the outcome of judgement is. In unity let’s renew & build our great Party and Country!
Chamisa responded by posting:
IT’S A PURIFICATION MOMENT!DICTATORSHIP NEVER WINS. DICTATORSHIP ALWAYS ULTIMATELY FALLS AND SO SHALL IT BE WITH ALL THOSE WHO CONNIVE WITH IT!THE PEOPLE ALWAYS WIN AND THE PEOPLE SHALL GOVERN! BIGGER AFTER IT ALL. CORRECTNESS NEVER COMES SECOND BEST!#Godisinit
