Jacob Mafume elected new Harare Mayor
MDC Alliance’s Jacob Mafume has been elected new Harare City Mayor.
MDC Alliance President Nelson Chamisa congratulated Mafume while blasting MDC-T President Thokozani Khupe for recalling Herbert Gomba.
“Congratulations to Cnlr Jacob Mafumhe for being elected the New Mayor of Harare!This is to replace Cnlr Hebert Gomba who was recalled by MDC Thoko! Togaraseiiko,” he posted on social media.
The former MDC Alliance spokesperson replaces Herbert Gomba who was controversially recalled by another party MDC-T after the Supreme Court ruling that allowed the minority party MDC-T to recall MDC Alliance legislators.
LIVE UPDATES: There was one spoilt paper and out of the 33 votes cast, Councillor Jacob Mafume has been announced the winner and the new Harare Mayor after garnering 19 against Councillor Mukunguma who got 14 votes.
His Worship Mafume now delivering his acceptance speech. He says he wants to turn Harare around to be a smart city. He promises to lead a corruption free council and urges his team to prioritise service delivery.
Verification of papers is now underway to check if the ballot papers are indeed 34.
Councillors are now voting through writing names of their preferred candidates on ballot papers.
Acting Mayor Mupamawonde counting ballot papers and he said there should be a total of 35 since other councillors have been recalled.

1. Clr Luckson Mukunguma has been nominated and seconded 2. Clr Jacob Mafume has also been nominated and seconded.

Finance Chairperson Clr Luckson Mukunguma and Human Resources Chairperson Clr Jacob Mafume are the frontrunners for Harare’s top civic job.
