Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s talk of meat and vegetables is not going anywhere. Once the champion of vegetables, he is now championing the consumption of meat.
Three months ago while addressing a crowd in Kuwadzana suburb, Mnangagwa was asked by one of the people in the audience if he could intervene to lower the prices of meat. He had gone to his rival Nelson Chamisa’s stronghold to carry out a Monthly Clean Up Campaign. His response was, “ndodya zvangu muriwooo, nemapotato.” (I only eat vegetables and potatoes).
His speech was not well received by Zimbabweans as they felt he was not being sincere. A few months before the Kuwadzana jibe, his mid air meal time photo had been leaked to the public through his Deputy Press secretary George Charamba who operates a Twitter Account Jamwanda
The President has now come under fire after his remarks in Kwekwe at a recently held field day at his farm. During his speech, he told the audience that he eats a lot of meat. “At my farm we have cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry. We eat whatever we want whenever we want,” he said. He urged other farmers to enter into animal husbandry so they can enjoy meat.
The field day could not go without drama. Newsday reported that Vice President Constantino Chiwenga snubbed the event as he chose to stay in the capital. The snub is evident that all might not be well in the ruling party as succession politics is taking centre stage.
