Orlando Pirates strengthened their hold on top spot in the Betway Premiership after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Tactical Changes Pay Off
Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made several changes following the Soweto Derby triumph over Kaizer Chiefs. Evidence Makgopa, Andre de Jong, and Deano van Rooyen were handed starts, while Yanela Mbuthuma, Tshepang Moremi, and Kamogelo Sebelebele dropped to the bench.
First-Half Battle
Pirates settled quickly despite tricky conditions. Makgopa nearly opened the scoring early on, but Polokwane goalkeeper Lindokuhle Mathebula produced a sharp save. The Buccaneers dominated possession, with Oswin Appollis orchestrating play against his former club. However, Polokwane’s disciplined defence limited clear chances, while Pirates keeper Sipho Chaine had little to do before halftime.
Breakthrough After the Interval
The deadlock was broken shortly after the restart. A loose ball in the box fell to Relebohile Mofokeng, who reacted quickest and headed home his fourth league goal of the season. Polokwane coach Phuti Mohafe responded with attacking substitutions, but Pirates maintained control, later introducing fresh legs to sustain their tempo.
Late Drama
For much of the second half, Pirates looked comfortable, but the game turned in the 85th minute. Bonginkosi Dlamini found space and volleyed past Chaine to level the score, sparking hopes of a comeback for the hosts.
Yet the Buccaneers had the final say. In the 90th minute, Deon Hotto delivered a pinpoint cross from the left, and Patrick Maswanganyi arrived unmarked to slot home the decisive goal.
Crucial Victory
The late strike ensured Pirates walked away with all three points, keeping their title challenge alive and intensifying the race with rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.
