Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has once more offered an apology to the club’s supporters after their 2-1 defeat to Stellenbosch FC in a Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium last night.
The loss — Chiefs’ third in their last four outings — further widened the gap between them and the league’s frontrunners, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
A Tale of Two Halves
Chiefs started brightly, taking the lead through Flavio Silva in the first half. They created several chances but failed to convert, leaving Stellenbosch with a lifeline. The visitors seized control after the break, striking back through Langelihle Phili and Devin Titus to secure victory.
Ben Youssef admitted frustration:
“Firstly, we have to apologise to our fans for this result. We dominated the first half, created opportunities, but didn’t take them. Then we started the second half very badly.”
Chislett’s Long-Awaited Debut
One silver lining was the debut of midfielder Ethan Chislett, who finally featured after 27 matches. Operating in the No.10 role, he impressed with sharp passing and intelligent movement. Asked why it took seven months to introduce him, Ben Youssef replied:
“The answer is simple — we wanted him to be good like today.”
Tactical Changes Fall Flat
With Stellenbosch firmly in control midway through the second half, Chiefs made four substitutions — introducing Mduduzi Shabalala, Mfundo Vilakazi, Thabo Cele and Wandile Duba. They replaced Chislett, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Silva and Ashley du Preez. The changes, however, failed to shift momentum, something Ben Youssef conceded responsibility for.
Derby Looms Large
The defeat comes at a difficult time, with Chiefs now heading into the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates low on confidence. They have lost three of their last four matches, including two against Gavin Hunt’s Stellenbosch side in just a month.
Questions also linger over squad selection. Promising attacker Asanele Velebhayi, who has looked lively when given opportunities, has not featured in the last five matches. Similarly, Luke Baartman’s absence has raised eyebrows, with Ben Youssef pressed to explain their exclusion.
