Mamelodi Sundowns have climbed to the summit of the Betway Premiership after Marcelo Allende’s late strike sealed victory over AmaZulu FC.
Sundowns and Pirates Neck-and-Neck
The win sees Sundowns level with Orlando Pirates on 38 points. However, Miguel Cardoso’s men hold the advantage on goal difference, boasting 27 goals compared to the Buccaneers’ 26.
First-Half Battle
Sundowns dominated much of the opening half and nearly broke the deadlock after 20 minutes when Khulumani Ndamane’s powerful header forced a sharp save from Darren Johnson. Their momentum was briefly halted when Thapelo Morena picked up an injury, prompting Nuno Santos to come on as his replacement.
AmaZulu’s best chance came just before the interval, with Thando Ngwenya finding space in the box, only to be denied by Ronwen Williams.
Second-Half Pressure
The second half mirrored the first, with Sundowns enjoying possession but struggling to carve out clear openings. Tashreeq Matthews and Brayan Leon both tested Johnson from distance, while AmaZulu looked to hold firm.
Arthur Zwane made changes for AmaZulu after 65 minutes, introducing Bayanda Zulu and Mondli Mbanjwa. Sundowns responded by bringing on Iqraam Rayners to add fresh energy in attack.
Allende Delivers the Decisive Moment
With 20 minutes left, Leon had a promising chance inside the area, but Johnson once again stood tall. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 84th minute when substitute Marcelo Allende found space in the box and calmly slotted home, securing all three points for Sundowns.
