There was once a man named Makhehlene Makhaula, known to his teammates simply as “Shoes.” Born in Randfontein, he wasn’t just another footballer chasing glory—he was a fighter, a dreamer, and at one point, a man on the brink of surrender.
🌑 The Fall Before the Rise
The year was 2020. The world was gripped by a pandemic, and Makhaula’s career was caught in its own storm. Highlands Park, the club he had poured his heart into, was sold. The future looked bleak. At 34, he felt the weight of time pressing down on his shoulders. Headlines whispered that he was too old, too slow, too late.
“I remember wanting to give up,” he confessed in Giants, the Orlando Pirates documentary. “I thought it was over.”
He had played for Trabzon FC in 2014, then Free State Stars, then Highlands Park. Each chapter brought its own battles. By 2023, he was with AmaZulu FC, still grinding, still hoping. But the fire was flickering.
☠️ The Call That Changed Everything
Then came the call.
His agent’s voice crackled through the phone: “Cash, Pirates want to sign you.”
Makhaula laughed. “No way,” he replied. “I’m 34. Why would Pirates want me?”
But fate, it seemed, had other plans. The Sea Robbers saw something others didn’t—a warrior with unfinished business.
🏴☠️ The Sea Robber’s Renaissance
Makhaula joined Orlando Pirates and transformed from a man on the edge to a midfield general. He didn’t just play—he led. In the 2022–23 season, he made 10 appearances. The next year, 19 more, with a goal to his name. By 2024–25, he had racked up 44 appearances and another goal.
He lifted the MTN8 trophy in 2023. Then the Nedbank Cup. Then another MTN8 in 2024. And somewhere along the way, he was crowned Betway Premiership Midfielder of the Season.
From nearly walking away to walking tall—Makhaula’s journey became a testament to belief, grit, and the quiet power of destiny.
🙏 Gratitude and Grace
“We thank God and our ancestors,” he said. “They know the paths they have set for us.”
And so, the man called Shoes kept running—not just across the pitch, but into the hearts of fans who saw in him a story worth believing in.
