Kaizer Chiefs fans have long yearned to see Bongani Zungu don their colors since his departure from Mamelodi Sundowns. However, the reality is, the much-anticipated move hasn’t materialized for the midfielder affectionately known as ‘Ben 10.’
Zungu, a 31-year-old midfield maestro, has been without a club for the past five months despite having several options. One notable suitor was Wydad Casablanca, where a reunion with his former Sundowns coach, Rulani Mokwena, seemed almost destined. Yet, after a few days of training with the Moroccan giants, fitness concerns saw Zungu leave without a contract.
Why a Kaizer Chiefs Move is Unlikely for Zungu
Zungu’s journey back to the Premier Soccer League saw him rejoining Sundowns after stints in France and Portugal. Despite his illustrious past, his second spell with Masandawana didn’t match the heights of his first. While he added two more league titles to his name, his impact was less pronounced.
Crucially, Zungu still harbors dreams of an international career, making a move to Kaizer Chiefs less appealing. The Amakhosi’s absence from CAF competitions and their current eighth-place standing in the Betway Premiership also make them a less attractive option for a player of Zungu’s caliber.
At 31, Zungu still has much to offer and might find his next adventure in the Middle East or North Africa. Bringing the CAF Champions League winner to Naturena wouldn’t come cheap, requiring Kaizer Chiefs to allocate a substantial budget.
For now, Zungu remains a free agent, while Kaizer Chiefs turn their attention to reinforcing their attack in the upcoming January transfer window. Last season, ‘Ben 10’ managed only 13 league appearances for Sundowns, battling injuries throughout the campaign.
