After nearly two decades in the entertainment industry, Sizwe Dhlomo has ascended to the top, officially assuming the role of host for the Kaya 959 breakfast show.
Dhlomo’s journey began in 2005 when he emerged as the inaugural winner of the MTV Base VJ search. His deep understanding of youth culture propelled him to new heights, allowing him to mingle with global icons.
Notably, he co-hosted SABC1’s music program “Live” alongside Bonang Matheba. During this period, he also dominated the airwaves with “Siz N Scoop” on YFM (formerly Y), alongside Scoop Makhathini, before eventually making his mark at 947.
In May of last year, the 40-year-old broadcaster stepped into the Kaya 959 breakfast slot, transitioning from the afternoon drive, following Dineo Ranaka’s sudden departure.
Now, after nearly a year of hosting the show, Dhlomo’s appointment is official, and he shares the morning airwaves with Sol Phenduka.
Dhlomo sheds light on the process: “It’s been quite official for some time now. I signed my contract last year already. We were trying to get the afternoon show together first … that’s mainly the reason why we didn’t officially announce that I’d be taking over the breakfast slot,” he explains.
Initially, the plan was to have Azania Mosaka handle the afternoon drive, but her relocation overseas led to a change in strategy, ultimately resulting in Glen Lewis joining the team.
As one of the most influential voices in pop culture, Dhlomo reflects on his multifaceted role in the entertainment industry. “When I was younger, I thought I was doing radio and television just for the fun of it. Until Dillon Khan, who used to run MTV Base UK, told me on my first day of shooting not to look at myself as a TV presenter but more as a music journalist, which always stuck with me,” he shares.
His impact extends beyond the microphone, as he actively contributes to production and creative direction. From radio to television, Dhlomo’s journey exemplifies versatility and dedication.
