The entertainment industry is mourning the loss of Lebohang Mpyana, who played the role of Khelina on the popular drama series DiepCity. The 34-year-old actress passed away after a brief illness, according to her family.
The family announced her death on social media and asked for prayers and support during this difficult time. “We are heartbroken to share the news of our daughter Lebohang’s passing. Lebo succumbed to a short illness. We will share the details of the memorial service and funeral service soon,” the statement said.
Black Brain Pictures, the production company behind DiepCity, also expressed their condolences and praised Mpyana for her talent and impact. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Lebohang, who was a remarkable person and a fearless artist. She challenged expectations and inspired many with her skill.”
“Her absence leaves a huge gap in our hearts and in the entertainment industry. Lebogang brought ‘Khelina’ to life with her unique presence and dedication, and she will always be remembered. Her work will continue to motivate aspiring actors and actresses to pursue their dreams courageously, reminding them that persistence and hard work can make a lasting difference,” the statement said.
Mpyana previously told Sunday World that she believed DiepCity gave her a chance to shine and gain international recognition. She said she enjoyed portraying Khelina, a loudmouth and gossipmonger who lived in an informal settlement.
She also revealed that her humorous character opened up new opportunities for her, such as performing stand-up comedy in rural areas of Limpopo during the festive season. She said these were her first comedy shows and she hoped to explore this new career path.
Mpyana said she was grateful for the opportunity DiepCity gave her and she promised to give her best until the end of the show. “I have played Khelina with all my heart. I didn’t have to do much to play the character because she is based on my aunt. With the show coming to an end, everyone should expect a funnier Khelina than ever because I gave it my all,” she said.
