In the heart of the Big Apple, a South African beat pulsated through the iconic Madison Square Garden, as the world-renowned artist and producer, Nkosinathi Maphumulo, known to many as Black Coffee, took center stage. This was no ordinary event; it was a historic moment, as Maphumulo became the first South African to headline at this prestigious venue on Saturday, 7 October.
At 47, Maphumulo is no stranger to breaking barriers. He etched his name in the annals of music history by becoming the first African DJ to win a Grammy Award in 2022, a monumental achievement that sits proudly alongside his groundbreaking BET Award.
From sharing stages with global music icons like David Guetta, P. Diddy, and Drake, to producing for Drake’s new album, Maphumulo’s journey has been one of relentless pursuit of international recognition. His performance at the 20,000-seat capacity venue in New York City was yet another testament to his growing global influence.
The Grammy Award-winning artist from KwaZulu-Natal didn’t forget his roots though. He shared his spotlight with fellow South African artists making waves internationally – Major League DJs, Busisiwe Nolubabalo Nqwiliso aka Bucie, Msaki among others.
The echoes of his success reached far beyond the confines of Madison Square Garden. Back home in South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to laud the ‘We Dance Again’ hitmaker. “Congratulations to Black Coffee for being the first South African DJ to perform at Madison Square Garden in New York City, USA to a sold-out show this past Saturday. South African artists continue to distinguish themselves and promoting our talents on the global stage. We thank you for flying the National Flag,” tweeted the President.
