South African social media users are extremely unimpressed with Trevor Noah’s R33m deal sparks outrage. According to reports, the ad will only be a few minutes long and doesn’t require much from Noah except a few good words from the former Daily Show host. Many are now slamming both Trevor and the government, who they say should be spending the money on one of the many urgent issues the country is currently facing.
Love-Hate Relationship with Trevor Noah
For years now, many South Africans have had a love-hate relationship with SA-born US-based comedian Trevor Noah. While he has millions of local fans, he has an equal amount of people who seemingly can’t stand him. This was recently highlighted after various local publications revealed that the 36-year-old has just bagged a R33 million deal with the South African Department of Tourism.
According to BusinessTech, Trevor and rugby champion Siya Kolisi are set to do a five-minute ad promoting SA. Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille is currently trending online as locals wonder how she justifies paying the comedian millions for a five-minute advert.
Backlash Galore
Many are also saying that Trevor does not deserve the opportunity having done “nothing” for South Africa. In one post, popular user Chris Excel compared Trevor to local artist Zola 7. Take a look at the post below:
Zola 7:
- Built a library
- Built 117 houses
- Provided Scholarships
- Donated 3% of his earnings to charity
- Helped small businesses
- Built a Borehole
- Donated computers in schools
Trevor Noah:
- Spoke negatively about Zuma
- Did nothing for SA 🇿🇦
- Got R33 Million of our tax
Responding to this, Mzansi had a lot to say: “It really unfair… Why do they have to pay him such amount,” one person asked while another said: “There’s absolutely nothing that he has done for South Africans that makes him deserve R33m from the taxpayers’ money. Yes, he made some of us laugh, but thirty-three meters? I smell money laundering here.”
